Police Shootings In America |
Racism has
risen again and intolerance of people is clear from the recent events of the
police brutality which occurred in the recent times. It seems as if history is
undoing itself and all that the late Martin Luther King had done seems have
undone by these recent incidents particularly against the African American
community. When America is being run by an elected African American president,
prejudice and racist acts have incurred in and around the States without having
any justifiable ground. Now when celebs are opining their views nationally,
they are facing the flak of the existing biasness out there, thus absolving all
beliefs that tolerance and anti-racist movements are actually being effected.

The recent
event of Quarterback Colin Kaepernick protesting the acts of racism and police
brutality by not standing up during the national anthem spurned many who have
lashed back and have said that such is not only disrespectful but also ungrateful,
in view of his multi-million dollar contract. Kaepernick has retorted back in
respect of such comments as the money which is given to him for his playing
does not magically remove the racial incrimination which is prevalent in all
spheres of life. Studies have actually shown that the white American
counterpart earns more than its African American counterpart. So money is a
mere factor in the actual workings of the backlash which many athletes,
artistes and many others have faced. Oscar winning actress Halle Berry, who is
also one of the only black actresses to have received an Oscar has voiced her
concern over the future of her child who is of different skin. The question
remains is that will there be divide between people based on their skin and for
how long shall this intolerance remain. Martin Luther King fought hard the
civil rights of all mankind.
To stop the
long hatred against color; yet like a unattached string the yarn of all that
has been done till date seems to be unthreaded by such acts of police brutality
against civilians who have the right of protest. Things have become blurred
lines as the peaceful protest got out of hand and causing causalities on both
sides. Yet the distinct feel of partiality and bias runs deep in the recent
events. LeBron James stood for Kaepernick’s belief. LeBron stated that, he respected
the quarterback’s decision to a silent and peaceful of showing protest against
the heinous acts of recent days. It is about voicing one’s opinion and for that
one can do so in any manner they desire as long as it is peaceful. LeBron goes
to state that “He did it in the most peaceful manner I’ve ever seen someone
stand up and do something. So I can respect that.” The question is not about
disrespecting the national anthem, it is rather to bring peace amongst the people
in need and seek justice for those who have been gunned innocently. Instead
LeBron and other athletes including Kaepernick showed solidarity by wearing “I
can’t breathe!” T-shirts.
Stars across
America have voiced out their opinions and many have been quite vocal on the
social sites and these also include many “white skinned counterparts”.
Sarah
Michelle Gellar tweeted in her post against racism “Because some days,
especially recent days, are not filled with glitter and rainbows and emojis.
Here’s to loving each other’s insides, no matter what color may be on the
outside.”
Lady Gaga rightfully
tweeted “Stick together during this divided time. Be kind and compassionate to one
another. Speak positively and envision a peaceful future”.

Rapper
Macklemore called out to the white people of the country and stated that; “ I can’t help but think…IF I was put in the
exact same situation that Alton was in (the black civilian gunned by police),
I’d be alive today.. because of the color of my skin.” Thus he clearly
envisioned the present racial situation prevalent in the States.
Andy Cohen
perfectly frames the essence of the brutality and refers to Martin Luther
King’s speech where he writes “. Violence never brings permanent peace. It
solves no social problem: it merely creates new and more complicated ones.
Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction
for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather that
win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is
immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community
and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than
dialogue. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the
destroyers.”
Beyonce has
been quite vocal in her opinion against police brutality and is evident from
the graffiti which appears in her “Formation” video: “STOP SHOOTING US”. She
even wrote about the killings that were going on and were all unreported or were given so called justifications and
not investigated into.
John Legend
has aptly tweeted “So many people work so hard to find a reason why executing a
human being during a routine traffic stop is ok. IT’S NOT OK.”
At the end
of the day it remains a stark reality that a life based on whatever reason was
taken. Whether the same was justified or not is not depending on what majority
opine but what the actual truth is? Was the killing justified? And if not then
why are there no investigation on the murderers who are parading around in the
name of giving justice. Racism applies to no one. Justice is for all: All skins
and all colors. All are the same in the name of the Holy Lord. Then why
continue with such bias on the ground of color. Celebrities are merely voicing
out for justice: Justice for a safer world and justice for a safer society. If
mankind goes against mankind on the basis of color, then who knows, when we
will descend into mass destruction and the end of mankind as we know it. Raise
a voice against racism. Let it end now.
